Dr Elise Maud Inglis – Scottish Doctor. Dr Elise Maud Inglis set up and ran the first hospital staffed entirely by women which was used in France. She set up women’s units in Serbia, Salonika, Romania, Malta, Corsica and Russia. The British government actually rejected Inglis’ idea for a Women’s Hospital, but she persevered and managed to set up teams in these other nations. She served in Serbia in 1915 and was even captured at one point. She was also a keen supporter of the suffragette movement. She was the first woman to be awarded the Order of the White Eagle.
